5 Questions - Getting to Know MVA Staff and Faculty:
Marcia Moore, Upper School English/Dean of Faculty
1. Where did you grow up?
Hustonville, Kentucky (population 400), near Lexington, Kentucky.
2. Could you tell us about your position at MVA and how you landed working at MVA?
I am currently the English Department Chair and Dean of Faculty. I first interviewed with Dr. Stephens about a position when we moved to Florida in 1994, but it was for teaching drama, and I had no experience in that area. But I loved the school even way back then. Flash forward ten years: in July 2004 I received a phone call from Mrs. Shackelford asking if I might be interested in an English position at MVA. I interviewed, was hired, and here I am eight years later.
3. Could you comment on the experience and responsibilities of being the Dean of Faculty?
As Dean of Faculty, I have the opportunity to train and mentor new teachers and assist teachers with curriculum, technology, and teaching strategies in general. I also assist Mr. Ross, Mrs. Bekemeyer, and Mr. Urquhart with the evaluation of upper school teachers and the hiring of new faculty.
4. What is your favorite hobby?
There are several activities I enjoy, but running is probably my favorite because it gets me outside and helps me to relax. Since I didn't take up running until about six years ago, it's also been a great way to show my own children that taking on challenges is important at all stages of life. 10K is my favorite distance, but I usually do a couple of half marathons every year for a greater challenge.
5. Aside from weather, how have you found where you grew up to be different than Florida?
Well, the passion for Kentucky basketball is certainly missing here! Florida also has greater diversity, both in its population and in its attractions--natural and tourist. We've lived here for nearly 18 years, and although it's always nice to visit in Kentucky a few times each year, Florida is now home.
