Leadership is an invaluable quality to any athletic team and this month's Montverde Academy Athlete of the Month is not only a leader on the basketball court, but a leader in the classroom and the school community. A Division I commit to George Washington University for 2012, Patricio Garino helped lead the Eagles to a Montverde Academy Invitational Tournament Championship in late January and an ESPN Rise National Ranking of 15th. "Patricio's character really shined the first game at the M.A.I.T. against Monsignor Pace," said Head Coach Kevin Boyle. "He has been battling tendonitis all year and stepped up when the team needed him and scored 17 points in his first game back to set the tone for the weekend. He's got tremendous character." Off the court, Garino maintains a cumulative 3.4 grade point average and is one of 14 senior prefects on campus selected each year as key leaders in MVA's residential and day student programs.

Note from Mike Potempa, Director of Athletics: "Patricio Garino is not only a great basketball player, but a person of tremendous character. I witnessed this first hand as he spent 4 days and countless hours with Juanjo Morales (one of our soccer players) who was in the hospital after he suffered a broken leg over the Christmas holiday. He is obviously very talented on the court, but in my mind he exemplifies what a true leader in our community should aspire to be. He is mature beyond his years and I look forward to following his basketball career at George Washington next year. "

Congratulations to Patricio Garino for being named Montverde Academy Athlete of the Month for the month of January 2012.
