School Leave Policy

school policy

Students and/or their parents who are making a request to miss one or more days of school must complete a school leave request outlining the time he or she will be away from school and specifically explain the reason for missing school. Once the request has been submitted to the Assistant Headmaster it will be marked excused or unexcused. The final step requires the student to have each of their teachers; advisor and dorm parent if applicable sign the leave request so each person is aware of the circumstances.

Montverde Academy understands that a student may have the need for a scheduled extended absence from school. Some examples of an excused scheduled absence may be a family wedding or graduation. We also understand that emergencies may arise such as a funeral in which a student may need to request several days away from school.

Montverde Academy makes every effort to publish the school calendar nearly a year in advance so parents and students are able to plan their schedules and make appropriate flight arrangements. Likewise, the Academy has formulated a vacation schedule that gives more than sufficient time during holidays for doctor's appointments and college visits. Unfortunately there are always a number of students/parents whom for various reasons request exemptions or special arrangements for exams or class. Extended vacations, cheaper ticket prices, mistakes in reservations, personal convenience, etc. are not considered an excused absence.   In order to ensure integrity for our exams and to maintain consistency during the class day we will not make exceptions for any student/parent that elects to depart campus early or return late with an invalid reason. These absences will be considered unexcused. If a student or parent elects to take an unexcused absence, the student will be responsible for the consequences.

EXCUSED: The guidelines for missing school when excused are:

  1. The student should complete the school leave request as early as possible to inform their teachers of their absence(s).
  2. The student will be responsible for any work that is missed and if it is graded work, the student will be responsible for completing it according to the deadline set by the teacher.
  3. Students should try to obtain homework assignments in advance and complete as much of the work as possible in order to not get behind.

UNEXCUSED: Students and parents must realize that there are consequences for missing days of school that are deemed unexcused.

  1. The student should complete the school leave request as early as possible to inform their teachers of their absence(s).
  2. For any graded work such as homework assignments, quizzes, tests, papers or projects, the student will receive a zero for missing this work.
  3. If a student departs early or returns late from a holiday, that student will be responsible for making up class time during a Saturday school session. Each day or portion of a day missed corresponds to one day of Saturday School.
