Today, MVA Lower-school students will begin assembling blankets they will complete and present to Mrs. Murphy, a local "Project Linus" representative, at the February 16th, 2012, MVA Assembly. Montverde Academy's Lower-school Project Linus donations are inspired by the "Linus" character in Charles M. Schulz's famous American comic strip entitled "Peanuts" that centers around its central character "Charlie Brown" - a child who, even through numerous failures and hardships, remains a steadfast optimist in his life and through his interactions with friends like devoted pal Linus - the brother of "Lucy" and the infatuation of "Sally." Linus is known for his kindness, superior intelligence, quoting of Christian scriptures, and the mockery he endures for carrying a "security blanket" that dog-character "Snoopy" often tries to steal in both the comic strip and animated television programs. According to the Project Linus website, just as Linus was "comforted by his blanket, Project Linus strives to do the same and more for children who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need. The blankets our nearly 400 chapter coordinators collect from thousands of "blanketeers" (volunteers) across the United States and then distributed to these children provide love, a sense of security, warmth, and comfort."

Jayne Beucher, MVA Assistant to the Dean of Lower-school, tells Montverde.net, "The point of the project is for the younger student to actually "make" something to give to someone else. Not just buy something in a store, or have a parent give money to give to a cause...but to empower the student to feel like they can make a difference." Likewise, Kellie Monteleone, MVA 2nd grade Lower-school teacher, stated, "We feel this is a great opportunity for the students to experience the satisfaction of participating in a meaningful event. When they present their blankets on February 16th to the Linus Project Staff, they can take pride in knowing it was all their own work."
