Montverde Academy's Lady Eagles' Varsity Softball team played very well this past weekend winning one of two games at the NTC Preseason Classic in Clermont, Florida. In game 1, the Eagles, led by the expert Head Coaching of Bob Pinto and his adept Assistant Head Coaches Lonnie Richardson and Kelly Golden, capitalized on a productive first inning against visiting Lake Highland Prep that featured skillful hitting (and runs batted-in) by Taylor Dotson and Hannah Futo as well as a bases-loaded line-drive from Alexina Mora that hit the left field fence and resulted in an in-the park home run that brought in 4 runs and contributed to Montverde Academy's 5-0 overall victory. Also remarkable was Mora's valuable pitching – attaining two strike-outs and giving up only two hits and in the contest. In Game 2, Olympia High School defeated MVA 4-3 in an 8 innings game. Nonetheless, the Lady Eagles had a respectable showing with noteworthy play in the game from Natalie Rodriguez who batted 2-4 and scored 2 runs, Victoria Atkinson who batted 2-4 with an RBI, and Dominique Johns whose persuasive pitching included 5 strikeouts. According to MVA's Assistant Head Coach Kelly Golden, MVA "held their own with the Titans and went ahead 2-0 scoring a run in the 3rd inning and 5th inning. Olympia then tied the game in the bottom of the 6th inning scoring two runs. The game finished after 7 innings tied and the coaches of both teams decided to play one more inning. Montverde got the first shot in the 8th inning and Victoria Atkinson hit a single and Taylor Dotson drove her in making the score 3-2. Olympia then got a chance, and got two hits to tie it at 3-3. Olympia then squeezed a player in with a close play at the plate, they won the game 4-3."
We wish our MVA Lady Eagles' Varsity Softball team the best in their new upcoming season that begins tomorrow, Wednesday, February 8, 2012, on the road against East Ridge High School.
