NATIONAL CHAMPIONS GET THEIR TROPHY
The light glistening off the glass trophy in the Montverde Academy gym was no match for the bright smiles on the faces of the school's soccer team sitting right behind it. On a copper plate at the base of the trophy the inscription read: "ESPN Rise Magazine Powerade Fab 50 National Champions:Montverde Academy. It was the crowning moment in a soccer season filled with long practices, physical games and a couple of bruises along the way.
This was Montverde's time to enjoy!
The Eagles were officially crowned National Champions by ESPN Rise Magazine in a ceremony at Roberts Gymnasuim. They finished 26-0, the first undefeated season in the histroy of the program. Out of more than 3500 teams across the United States, Montverde soccer was chosen Number 1 because of its accomplishments, commitment and drive.
Sheldon Shealer from ESPN handed the plaque that honors the team to Head Coach Mike Potempa, who in turn handed the glass trophy to the team captains Heitor Vinci, Pedro Zaccarelli and Anderson Cardoso. At the same time, Assistant Coach Chuck Monteleone waited patiently yet anxiously to pull the cord to uncover the National Championship banner hanging on a back wall. It all came together perfectly..
As the white sheet fell and the captains hoisted the trophy in the air, the entire Montverde school community including, students, faculty and staff cheered wildly, their pride echoing through the walls of the gym.
"This is our moment to be proud", said coach Potempa. "This shows what hard work can accomplish and it shows what Montverde is all about. We truly are winners".
The team will be awarded rings in the future as a long-lasting reminder of the National Championship season.
