Montverde Academy’s Benitez Wins FCWT at Eagle Creek

Last month, Montverde Academy 9th grader and GGGA student Vicente Benitez discovered himself tied with Priyanshu Singh at 4-under-par 142 after 36 holes that forced a playoff in the FCWT(Future Collegians World Tour) Boys 13-15 Division Tournament at Eagle Creek in Statesboro, Georgia. Benitez, originally from Mexico, competed very well and attained consecutive rounds of 71 at Eagle Creek before defeating Singh on the first playoff hole by sinking an opportune birdie putt from a challenging 12- foot distance. According to their website, the FCWT "is a 501c3 non-profit organization committed to helping young men and women, ages 11-19, in their pursuit of earning a college scholarship through the challenge of competitive golf." The win was another great victory for MVA's Benitez who last November won the FCWT at Innisbrook and recorded a runner-up finish at Champions Gate Golf Course in Orlando, Florida. In the Boys 16-19 Division at FCWT, Montverde Academy 10th grader Rafael Barnoya successfully tied for fifth at 3-under-par 143. Also noteworthy was that according to the Gary Gilchrist Golf Academy website, their students "recorded rounds of under par at Eagle Creek. Barnoya fired a 4-under 69 in the first round, Bown carded a 4-under 69 in the final round, Benitez had a pair of 2-under 71s."
