20111222 MVA Golf 1
20111222 Santiago Lopez

Montverde Academy is very pleased with our students who also aspire to be junior golfers and in membership with the American Junior Golf Association, a non-profit organization whose mission is "dedicated to the overall growth and development of young men and women who aspire to earn college golf scholarships through competitive junior golf." Over the last year, 6 MVA student junior golfers - 9th Grader's Evaristo Rubio and Salvador Rocha, 10th graders Santiago Lopez and Rafael Barnoya, 11th grader Matthew Marquez, and 12th grader Carlos Madrigal - have all demonstrated that hard work coupled with discipline and dedication results in success. These junior golfers have stayed focused, taken instruction from various golf mentors, spent many hours refining their golf skills and journeying to events throughout the United States working extremely hard to place well in junior tournaments as they have maintained their academic responsibilities to Montverde Academy.

This academic year, Evaristo Rubio, Santiago Lopez and Matthew Marquez achieved Montverde Academy's academic honor of Magna Cum Laude. Rubio also was selected to the MVA Honor Roll. Aside from being well-rounded students who've balanced their academic tasks with junior golf-tournament competition, these individuals have improved their techniques and scores and had successful appearances in various junior golf competitions over the last year. 9th Grader's Evaristo Rubio and Salvador Rocha, both from Mexico, competed very well this year on the links. In May of 2011, Rubio tied for 51 in a field size of 72 while scoring 79-81-160 in his finish at the Junior All-Star Golf Tournament at Stonelick Hills in Batavia, Ohio. Rubio also had fine rounds of golf at the TaylorMade-Adidas Golf Junior All-Star Tournament at Chateau Elan in Braselton, Georgia this past April – scoring 89-86-175 in a field size of 96. Rocha was similarly successful in his golfing efforts this year finishing 41 in a field size of 57 at the Junior All-Star Golf Tournament at Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, scoring 74-80-234 and at the TaylorMade-Adidas Golf Junior All-Star at Chateau Elan Rocha finished tied for 26th in a field size of 96 posting a score of 74-71-80-225. MVA 10th grader Santiago Lopez, also from Mexico, golfed well at Hilton Head too as he tied for 33rd in a field size of 57. Lopez also had a very respectable showing at the Montverde Academy Junior All-Star Invitational in October finishing 23rd in a field size of 51 and scoring an 84-37-74-195. Fellow MVA 10th Grader Raphael Barnoya, from Guatemala, also enjoyed a fine performances at Montverde Academy Junior All-Star Invitational and tied for 41st in a field size of 51, and also tied for 15th in a field size of 71 scoring a 77-71-70-218 at the Evitt Foundation RTC Junior All-Star Golf Tournament at the WindStone Golf Club of Ringgold, GA, last June. 11th grade golfer Matthew Marquez, from Trinidad, tied for 26th at the MVA Junior All-Star and also competed well at the Junior All-Star at Stonelick Hills as he tied for 26th in a field of 72 scoring a 79-75-154 for the tournament. 12-grader Carlos Madrigal, from Venezuela, golfed quite fittingly in many competitions this year- most notably finishing tied for 37th in a field of 54 at the UnderArmour/Vicky Hurst Championship in Port St. Lucie, Florida in April.
