Hoops Visit St. Jude's Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee

Last month, our Montverde Academy's Boys' Varsity Basketball team competed very well in the enduring Penny Hardaway's Hoopfest high-school basketball classic held annually at White Station High School in Memphis, Tennessee. Proceeds from the tournament went to nearby St. Jude's Hospital. The tournament's participants included many eminent nationwide boys' basketball teams such as Simeon High School from Chicago, Illinois, Oak Hill Academy from Oak Hill, Virginia, Our Savior from Long Island, NY, as well as four local Memphis-area area teams. In between games on the morning of January, 20,2012, Montverde Academy players shared breakfast and then toured the St. Jude's Hospital. During the hospital excursion, players were allowed access to the facility and met hospital officials and patients and were explained the St. Jude's history, how the hospital was conceptualized, and of how St. Jude's Hospital reported 1.7 million dollars a day operating costs that are maintained exclusively by private and public donations. The St. Jude's visit was a great educational experience for the MVA basketball team and staff. Makini Campbell, MVA parent and Lower/Middle-school Counselor, also participated in the team's field trip and apprises Montverde.net, "The Hospital treats children who have cancer, and sickle cell disease. A mother who was a part of the St. Jude's community spoke to the boys about her experience. Penny Hardaway spoke to the boys about philanthropy and giving back to their community." Our M.A.I.T Champion Eagles are back in action this weekend playing their final two games of the season this Friday, February 3, 2012, at Lake Wales (6:30p.m.) in Bartow, Florida, and Saturday, February 4, 2012, at North Broward Prep (6:00 p.m.) in Ocala, Florida.
