The Montverde Academy Girls Varsity Basketball team recently won their first game against Central Florida Christian Academy, from Orlando, Florida, by the score of 36- 23. In that victory, Junior forward Corinne Missi had 16 points, 10 rebounds, and 4 steals, while freshman guard Gloria Katuka finished up with 8 points, 13 rebounds, and 5 steals. Akela Furbert, also a member of Montverde Academy girls' varsity soccer, contributed 8 points and 10 steals as Freshman Forward Lauren Kandrach finished the evening with 4 points and 12 rebounds. After the win, first-year Head Coach Steve Kenner said, "I am ecstatic with this accomplishment, the girls have been working extremely hard and tonight was the culmination of our work in practice. The girls played with passion, intensity, and a sense of urgency against a good team. What I am most pleased with is that we played together. We played like a team, and I believe this is the start of something great. This win has inspired our confidence and encouraged us to become a little bit better than the day before."
Although the season has presented various challenges, the 2011-12 MVA Lady Eagles' first victory was an essential accomplishment for a team in the initial stages of building a vigorous girls' basketball program, appointing a new coaching staff, and comprised of both upper-school and middle-school athletes having to play more experienced area varsity teams. The Lady Eagles won again last Thursday as they defeated Faith Christian, also from Orlando, Florida. "To me, the belief in our selves is what is most important," Kenner said. "As long as we work hard and believe in our program, we will continue to improve day by day which will show in our results on the court." Congratulations to Coach Kenner, Coach Campbell, and the MVA Girls Varsity Basketball Team. We congratulate them on their recent victories and wish them continued success in their remaining games this season.
