Hoops Visit St. Jude's Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee

20120202 032 st. jude 330xLast month, our Montverde Academy's Boys' Varsity Basketball team competed very well in the enduring Penny Hardaway's Hoopfest high-school basketball classic held annually at White Station High School in Memphis, Tennessee. Proceeds from the tournament went to nearby St. Jude's Hospital. MVA Wins 2012 Montverde Academy Invitational Tournament

20120130 MAIT1 330xLast Saturday night, our Montverde Academy Eagles Boys' Varsity Basketball team won the prestigious Montverde Academy Invitational Tournament (M.A.I.T) by defeating Orlando Christian Prep 49-40 in front of a full-capacity crowd watching inside MVA's Henry O. Roberts Gymnasium. It was the Eagles' fourth championship in the annual tournament (now in its 9th season of operation) and the OCP victory further punctuated Montverde Academy's two previous accomplishments on both Thursday evening when they overwhelmed Monsignor

MVA Junior Kasey Hill Draws National Attention

basketball-kasey hill2According to many coaches, recruiters, fans and followers of high school basketball throughout the United States, Montverde Academy’s Kasey Hill is one of the most exciting and dynamic junior point guards in the Nation.  Hill, from Eustis, Florida, is a vibrant player that ESPN’s Recruiting Nation refers to as a “smooth combination guard that’s at his best when attacking the basket. In transition he displays a great burst of speed that separates him from defenders and in the half court Hill can finish in traffic with either hand.”

MAIT: Montverde Academy Invitational Tournament

MAIT 330xOn January 26-28, 2012, the Montverde Academy annual MAIT (Montverde Academy Invitational Tournament) is scheduled to take place at the Roberts Gymnasium on the campus of Montverde Academy. This electrifying high-school basketball tournament is in its 9th year of showcasing both regional and nationally ranked competition from throughout the country. Montverde Academy’s Johnson Selected Among 40 of the Nation’s Best

 

11 mu16 johnson dakari 061111 400ESPN Rise National Freshman of the Year, Dakari Johnson, now a Sophomore at Montverde Academy, has been identified among the nation’s best basketball players according to Montverde Academy Head Coach Kevin Boyle.  Johnson, who was also a member of the 2010 USA Basketball Developmental National Team, will travel to the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs to participate in a mini-camp to prepare for the Under-17 World Games in Lithuania during the summer of 2012.  “We are excited that Dakari has been identified among the nation’s best by USA basketball,” Boyle commented.  “The camp in Colorado Springs will be a great experience for him and Montverde Academy moving forward as he will be able to compete against the best players in the country for his age group.”

MVA Boys’ Basketball Remains Unbeaten and Nationally Ranked

20111215 bball 330xAccording to the most recent December 6, 2011, ESPN POWERADE FAB 50 National Boys' High School Basketball team rankings, MVA's Boys' Varsity Eagles are ranked #9 in America's Top 10 - above #10 perennial high-school basketball power DeMatha Catholic from Hyattsville, Maryland. Our Eagles are 5-0 and also ranked No. 7 in the country by USA Today after impressive victories this season that include beating ESPN's previously ranked No. 41 team Orlando Christian Prep.

Montverde Academy's new basketball coach doesn't arrive for another few weeks, but already he is introducing himself to local basketball fans.  Kevin Boyle is featured in the Orlando Sentinel today.  He talks about the big opportunity he has been given at Montverde and the plans he has to hopefully win a National Title.

Some of his former rival coaches also chime in on Boyle leaving New Jersey to compete here in Florida.

Girls Varsity Basketball Improving Each Week

20111212 Girlsbball 330xThe Montverde Academy Girls Varsity Basketball team recently won their first game against Central Florida Christian Academy, from Orlando, Florida, by the score of 36- 23. In that victory, Junior forward Corinne Missi had 16 points, 10 rebounds, and 4 steals, while freshman guard Gloria Katuka finished up with 8 points, 13 rebounds, and 5 steals. Akela Furbert, also a member of Montverde Academy girls' varsity soccer, contributed 8 points and 10 steals as Freshman Forward Lauren Kandrach finished the evening with 4 points and 12 rebounds.

MVA represented in March Madness

It's MARCH MADNESS times six at Montverde Academy!  Six former basketball players who played for the Eagles are now getting ready to play in college basketball's post season.  Four are playing for teams that are headed to the NCAA tournament while two are playing for teams headed to the NIT tournament.

The players getting ready for the NCAA tournament are:  James Bell (2010) Villanova, Dash Harris (2008) Texas A&M, Jamail Jones (2010) Marquette and Steve Tchiengang (2008) Vanderbilt.

The hoopsters who are NIT-bound are:  Marcus Capers (2008) Washington State and Ugo Okam (2010) Harvard.

Excitement Builds Around Coach Kevin Boyle and the MVA Boys Varsity Basketball Team

20111025 Kevin_Boyle_headshot_800xMontverde Academy is very excited to have Kevin Boyle as their Varsity Boys Basketball Coach. Coach Boyle joins MVA after a prestigious coaching career at St. Patrick High School in Elizabeth, New Jersey. His coaching career began in 1988 and led him to teach marketing and public relations, become a successful fundraiser for student scholarships, and achieve basketball coaching triumphs for over two decades that helped him to accomplish 23 titles and numerous national awards of recognition that include the 2011 Naismith Coach of the Year, the 2009 ESPN National Coach of the Year, and the 2007 USA Today National Coach of the Year. Coach Boyle is one of only four coaches in high school basketball history to win the National Coach of the Year honor three times.

MVA wins first round of MAIT

MAIT 2011Junior Patricio Garino lead Montverde Academy to a commanding win over The First Academy by pouring in a gam-high 18 points in the opening round of th Montverde Academy Invitational Tournament at Roberts Gym Thursday night.  The Eagles defeated the Royals 66-50.

Senior forward Steve Missi scored 17 points while Senior Guard DeForest Carter chipped in 13.  Missi pulled down 11 rebounds while DeCarter had 10.  Other Eagles helped out big in the win with Sophomore Kasey Hill adding four assists and Senior Jose Rodriguez grabbing four steals.

Montverde takes on Huntington Prep (who beat St. John Neuman) Friday night at 7:30.
