PA Meeting for 2/3/2012
Board members present; Judy Newlin, Lora Feingold, Heather Johnson, Brenda Boggs, Ann Megler, Jill Turnquist
Due to Cheryl being ill, our fantastic Vice President Judy Newlin called the meeting to order at 8:30 sharp.
Karla Lafferty was first to speak about the Night for the Cure event. On Fri., 3/2 MVA students, faculty, staff and their families will be raising money for The American Cancer Society. From 6PM – 12 AM we will have teams walking around the track while groups like the SGA, NHS, and Key Club run booths with food, drinks, bounce house, and dunk tank! Here are three ways you can help raise money too! Run your own booth with your favorite product or service. Put a team together, get some sponsors, and come out to walk. Or just show up and support our walkers, play games, and eat some food! If interested contact Mike Foley or Karla Lafferty.
Monique Glass then updated on the Mother/Son camp out on 2/25-2/26. We have about 140 attendees planned for this awesome trip to the Elks Youth Lodge in Umatilla. Mothers and sons will be treated to activities like archery, canoeing, Velcro wall, arts and crafts, and group games. All meals and snacks will be provided including s'mores! Monique has sent out schedules and packing suggestions as well as confirmation that she received your RSVP along with sizes for camp T-shirts. Both tent campers and cabin campers are sure to enjoy all the comforts of home. The cost of this event is $20 per person.
Heather Johnson was next up with the Family Day (this year we are calling it "MVA Carnival Day") event on 3/31. We are currently getting permits and making final decisions on food, volunteer needs, and cost. There is a planning meeting on 2/7 at 12PM at Chili's. So far we know that there will be bounce houses, games, food and unlimited carnival rides for the day. If interested in helping contact Heather Johnson or Brenda Boggs.
Todd Carpenter then informed everyone about MVA football. At this time we're looking for students from grades 8-11 that are interested in playing football. Ideally we'd like between 22 and 35 players but could use as many as 65. We will be rated as AAA and will be playing other AAA teams as well as AA. This is a great opportunity for local students to get involved with the amazing athletic programs MVA has become known for. They have already begun Football as an Activity for US students. Pop Warner also offers Montverde Football and Cheer to athletes from 5-15 that maintain good grades. The divisions are determined by age and weight. Each student has to play a number of minimum plays and is tracked by coaches. Registration starts online at the end of February.
A recap of our Pep Rally was given by Brenda Boggs. This 2nd year tradition was enjoyed tremendously by all the kids, faculty, and staff in attendance. Boys and girls Varsity and JV teams were recognized. There were also plenty of games and the cheerleaders were amazing too! Heather Johnson extended a warm Thank you to all the volunteers that helped make this an event that will be a tradition for many years to come.
Next, for the first time ever, our four Volunteers of the month were recognized and received chocolates and a card! Lori English, for spending hours and hours sewing the couch cushions back on to the couches in the library. Annette Friederich, for setting up and running the MAST tent. She also hosted the entire soccer team for Thanksgiving dinner! Anna Bird, for baking hundreds of cookies for Stockings for Students, decorating and taking down decorations on campus, and volunteering for both MAST and MAIT. And Kathy Wiebe, for saving the Pep Rally. With less than 24 hours notice Kathy drove to Orlando to pick up the lights, set them up, ran them during the Pep Rally, took them down, and then returned them! All of these women are incredible assets to MVA and their own families!
Lora Feingold then drew raffle tickets from the basket. Five lucky women received beautiful candles to bring home. Jennifer Fernandez, Katerina Tsolakis, and Carol Schmid were among the lucky recipients.
Judy then opened the floor for questions or comments or suggestions. Do we need volunteers for Carnival Day? Yes, for parking, registration, and some activities. Brenda Boggs will be creating a labor needs chart before the next planning meeting. Judy then reminded everyone of the Carnival Day planning meeting on 2/7 at Chili's and the next PA meeting on 3/2. The meeting adjourned at 9:10, with an invitation to stay and ask Todd Carpenter questions regarding football.
